The 10 Commandments of Web Design

The 10 Commandments of Web DesignWhen I saw the title of this article on Business Week, I was a bit put off by the tongue-in-cheek title. “Oh boy,” I thought, “Business Week is about to throw down some stone tablets”. As I scanned through the list of guidelines though, I couldn’t help but nod my head. All 10 are very much in line with current trends and the movement toward standards and usability. They’re fairly rudimentary points, but it’s worth a read.

I have one…

"Thou shalt not split an article into multiple pages to increase pageviews and ad revenue."

Funny. Micah noticed that they occasionally have an ad on there that expands to cover the content when you accidentally hover over it. Direct violation of commandment #2.

Thou shalt not use "shalt"

'thou shalt not hide content' Does anybody use hiding the content?

@jay, I've read a few research papers that say people don't mind pagination if they're on quick connections.

I think nymag.com does it really well. They have different lead art on each paginated page that really meshes well with the content. Do they get more pageviews and ad revenue from it? Yep. Do I care? Not really.

I don't mind the concept of pagination, but when there is a list of 10 things, and they split it up into 2 pages, it's a bit much. But maybe I just like to nitpick.
