Getting Personal
We’ll be meeting again in room 329 of the the McMaster College on Wednesday, February 25th. The theme for this month’s Refresh Columbia meetup is “getting personal”. To kick things off we’ll hear from Matthew Landau about a personal development project he’s been working on:
His application, Commonwealthy, is a multi-party barter system being developed on top of the Twitter API. It uses a database back-end to track favors done within the community, and delivers receipts and acknowledgment of payments through short Twitter messages.
To continue the personal theme, Jason Beaird will be talking briefly about the redesign of his personal site, jasongraphix.com, and moderating a group-wide discussion on the state of the personal web. Even amidst the recent talk about how popular social apps are killing the personal website, influential designers like Douglas Bowman, Jonathan Snook & Nick Finck have all released full redesigns of their sites in the last month alone. We’ll be discussing the following questions:
- What are the pros and cons of maintaining a personal website?
- Should web design students be required to create a personal website?
- How has the purpose of a personal website changed over the years?
Please bring your opinions and thoughts next week, and in the mean time, please participate in our personal website poll below.

That's a really great topic, i've always struggled with working on and keeping up my personal site and Jason you have launched a really great one for yourself recently.
I've always liked the sites that reflect more of a "life-stream" and not just the standard old portfolio, but that can be hard to pull off.
